If you think advertising alone will keep your business alive, think again.

Pepsi has a record of moving audiences of the annual Super Bowl through creative commercializing. But the pop giant said “eh-eh” to this year’s Super Bowl. Why? You can read all the details here if you don’t already know. Either way, I’m going to break it down real simple for you: Today, who you are and what you do online defines your business’ success.

If you’re in business, you better be online. Your website is a reflection of who you are, and what your company stands for – 300% of the time. That percentage is not an exaggeration at all. Consider a storefront or office that is open for 8 out of 24 hours in a day. That accumulates for 100% of the hours they are officially “open.” Multiply that by 3 and you get 24 – which equals the hours the company’s website is available each day. That’s 300% total.

Social media has taken over the way people respond to a brand. Your website’s presence and outreach to the social media audience is a determining factor in your success, whether you love Twitter or not. While the standard rule still applies – to captivate your audience – integrating social media into an SEO strategy means you’re promoting your message through means which will help increase traffic to your site. Google mediates who’s popular and who’s not. Just like that cheerleader in high school who never gave you a second glance if you didn’t do anything to get noticed, if Google isn’t acknowledging your website based on what it is you’re doing – there’s a problem.

Standing out from the Google crowd is more than a funny commercial or eye-catching billboard. You have to integrate a well thought out process to have a successful conversion rate, and it has to be bigger than a talking gecko. You have to create a strategy for getting noticed, which means your website is among the first Google finds when people search for what your company has to offer. Search engine optimizing your website will take your company to the next level, then the next level, then the next… and so on, and so forth.

What are you doing to get found by the hundreds or thousands or millions of people searching for your business’ products or services? I don’t care if you’re a local bakery shop and you say “oh, well we have a local customer base and they’re loyal.” Watch your orders drop in this economy when your “loyal” customers find the same product and service online for half your price. Or, you can compete. Compete with a strategy. Build an e-commerce. Make more money. Hire more people. Get a bigger store. Get found online from a new customer in Kansas, or Massachusetts… somewhere. Get covered by media for what you’re doing that’s different. Get noticed. Get successful. Get it?

Begin.
